Chandler Summer Splash & Dash Cools Things Down While Speeding Things Up, June 23, 2012.

The Downtown Chandler Community Partnership has teamed up with the Phoenix Regional Sports Commission to add splashing and dashing to summer festivities.

Professionally produced by HDE Agency, this year’s Chandler Summer Splash & Dash is gearing up to be bigger and better than ever with more splashing fun activities, food, live entertainment and the country’s most elite high school sprinters competing in the Arizona Sprints Showcase.

The Chandler Summer Splash & Dash will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2012 from 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. in downtown Chandler at the Dr. AJ Chandler Park (East). This is a family friendly event and admission is FREE.

One of the newest additions to this year’s event is live entertainment provided by Radio Disney Rockin’ Road Show from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. The Radio Disney Road Crew will keep the party hopping with music, interactive games and prizes all centered on family friendly fun.

As the weather heats up, the kiddos will enjoy more than 20 water activities include slides, games, swimming pools, swimming lessons and safety tips, misters, dunk tanks, bounce houses, water balloon battles, carnival style games, cyber maze water tag and a special area designated just for toddlers and preschool aged children.

Ballet Folklorico, Tamale Making Classes, a Salsa Challenge and Piñatas among festivities planned for El Palacio of Chandler’s Seis Días de Fiesta, May 1-6, 2012.

Cinco de Mayo celebration to include cooking classes, dance performances, fundraisers, giveaways, games and a salsa challenge.

The onset of spring is said to bring April showers and May flowers. That might not always hold true in Arizona but one thing that is for certain is that the celebration of Hispanic culture, tradition, food and fun comes into full bloom on Cinco de Mayo.  This year, El Palacio Restaurant & Cantina of Chandler plans to celebrate this festive holiday with Seis Días de Fiesta or six days of celebration. From May 1-6 patrons will enjoy a variety of interactive ways to learn, eat, play, participate and give back to the community.

Kicking off the Fiesta on May 1 is Tamale Tuesday—El Palacio will offer an assortment of fresh pork, chicken and beef tamales as well as coconut dessert tamales to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Tuesday continues when Anthony Serrano, owner of El Palacio of Chandler, and a highly accomplished culinary genius in his own right, will lead tamale making classes from 5-7 p.m. Classes will run in 30 minute sessions and are free for all to enjoy. Tips, tricks and every ingredient necessary to construct these corn husk filled delights will be provided.

On Wednesday, El Palacio will show their support for Chicanos por la Causa by donating a percentage of sales to benefit community programs supporting education, economic development, social services and housing. Chicanos por la Causa is a local non-profit organization that has made a difference in the lives of thousands of valley residents. Also, Wednesday is Family Day—kids eat free all day and there will be a variety of fun activities and games from 5-7 p.m.

Following in the momentum of community support, Thursday’s festivities will include a fundraiser to benefit the Ballet Folklorico Quetzalli—a dynamic dance group dedicated to the awareness and education of Mexican culture through folkloric dance. A percentage of the sales from 5-9 p.m. will benefit the dance group. As an added bonus, the dancers will perform live for patrons to enjoy. In addition, Thursday is Ladies Night and that means girls night out on a budget with buy one get one free select appetizers and salads paired with $2 margaritas and $3 sangrias.

On Friday, the Fiesta continues with a Piñata Party! Three piñatas packed to the brim with prizes and gift cards from local businesses will bring out the kid in everyone as patrons line up at 2, 5 and 7 p.m. to take a crack at the paper mache jackpots. Saturday is Cinco de Mayo and that means serious Fiesta time with drink specials and giveaways all day long!

Wrapping up the Seis Días de Fiesta will be Sunday’s Salsa Challenge.  El Palacio is looking for salsa makers to submit their best hot, mild and unusual salsas for a fun and flavorful throw down. From noon- 2 p.m., the public is welcome to stop by, enjoy samplings from each category and cast a vote for their favorites—unlimited chips are on the house. Contestants will have a chance to win prizes and earn bragging rights among their tomato, onion and garlic chopping friends. Olé!

The Hungry Monk to Feature Local Brew—Red 42, Benefiting the Pat Tillman Foundation, April 21-28, 2012.

It’s almost impossible to live in Arizona and not hear about the Pat Tillman Foundation, especially in April when the annual fundraising event, Pat’s Run is held at Arizona State University. As a strong supporter of community programs and charitable causes, the Hungry Monk announced this week their efforts to support the Pat Tillman Foundation by donating $1 from each pint sold of a special Pat Tillman Tribute brew, Red 42—a Lumberyard Brewery product. Red 42 is described as a big, bold red ale with a light hop bite with an ABV of 7.0.

During the week of April 21-28, patrons are encouraged to stop by the Hungry Monk and try this limited edition brew and support the Pat Tillman Foundation. In addition, anyone that participates in Pat’s Run on April 21st will receive 50% off their food bill at the Hungry Monk. *Must show race bib to server in order to receive the discount.

Before playing for the Arizona Cardinals, Pat was a Sun Devil at Arizona State University (ASU) where he proudly wore the #42 jersey. Pat’s Run, a 4.2 mile race, is an annual fundraising event.

“The Pat Tillman Foundation has been an instrumental part of the community in Arizona making a difference through their work to support veterans and their families. We’re proud to support these efforts,” said Hungry Monk proprietor, Jim Lolli.

Pat Tillman put his NFL career on hold to serve his country in the US Army where he ultimately lost his life in the line of duty. After Pat’s death, his friends and family established the Pat Tillman Foundation in his honor. For more information about the Pat Tillman Foundation’s resources and educational scholarships to veterans, active service members and their spouses, call 480-621-4074 or visit http://www.pattillmanfoundation.org.
